60. 잡아먹히지 않도록

참삶의 조건

 

예수께서 한 사마리아인이 양을 끌고 유대로 가는 것을 보시고 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “저 사람이 왜 양을 [묶어서] 갑니까?” 제자들이 그에게 말했습니다. “잡아서 먹으려는 것입니다.”그가 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “양이 살아 있을 때는 그가 그것을 먹지 못하지만, 양을 죽여 시체가 된 다음에는 먹을 수 있습니다.”제자들이 말했습니다. “그럴 수밖에 없습니다.”그가 그들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “그러므로 여러분도 마찬가지입니다. 여러분이 쉴 곳을 찾으십시오. 그래야 여러분도 시체가 되어 먹히는 일이 없을 것입니다.”

 

<They saw> a Samaritan carrying a lamb on his way to Judea. He said to his disciples, "That man is round about the lamb." 
They said to him, "So that he may kill it and eat it." 
He said to them, "While it is alive, he will not eat it, but only when he has killed it and it has become a corpse." 
They said to him, "He cannot do so otherwise." 
He said to them, "You too, look for a place for yourself within repose, lest you become a corpse and be eaten."

They saw a Samaritan going into Judea carrying a lamb. He asked his disciples: "What do you think he will do with that lamb?" They replied, "He'll kill it and eat it." He said to them, "As long as it remains alive he will not eat it; only if he kills it and it becomes a corpse. They said: "Otherwise he won't be able to do so." He said to them: "You too must seek a place for rest or you may become a corpse and be eaten."

(2) He said to his disciples: "That (person) is stalking the lamb." 
(3) They said to him: "So that he may kill it (and) eat it." 
(4) He said to them: "As long as it is alive he will not eat it, but (only) when he has killed it (and) it has become a corpse." 
(5) They said to him: "Otherwise he cannot do it." 
(6) He said to them: "You, too, look for a place for your repose so that you may not become a corpse (and) get eaten."

성경에는 없는 이야기이다. 사본에 구멍이 몇 군데 있어서 뜻이 확실하지 않은 절이다. 유대인의 음식물 규례에 의하면, 양을 잡으면 피를 완전히 빼고 나서 먹을 수 있다. 피는 생명이니 생명을 취하면 안 된다는 뜻이다. 피를 완전히 뺀 상태의 양이 여기서 말하는 ‘시체’에 해당된다. 중요한 것은 마지막 결론이다. 양이 살아 있을 때는 먹지 못하지만, 죽은 몸이 되고 생명의 피가 없어진 고깃덩어리가 되면 먹히고 마는 것처럼, 우리도 생물학적으로 살아 있지만 얼이 나간 산송장처럼 살면 먹힐 뿐이므로, ‘쉴 곳을 찾아 언제나 살아 있음을 유지함으로써 잡아먹히는 일이 없도록 하라.’는 가르침이다.

 

『도마복음』에서 ‘쉼’이란 앞의 제50, 51절에서도 언급한 것처럼 ‘구원’을 뜻한다. 영원한 근원으로 돌아가 그것과 다시 하나가 됨으로써 얻을 수 있는 평화와 안식의 삶이다. 깨달음을 통해 얻을 수 있는 이런 상태에 머무는 한 죽음을 맛보지 않는다. 따라서 살아 있는 양을 그대로 먹을 수 없는 것처럼, 우리도 이런 상태에서 참생명을 누리고 살면 잡아먹힐 염려를 하지 않아도 된다는 것이다. 바로 앞 절에서 “살아 계신 이를 주목하지 않으면 죽으리라.”고 했는데, 살아 계신 이를 주목하지 못하여 그의 말씀을 듣고 깨치지 못한 사람은 살아도 죽은 사람, 예수님을 통해 깨침을 받아야 참생명을 얻는다는 뜻이다.
